ABOUT BLACK RABBIT
Located across from Printers Alley, just two blocks from Broadway, Black Rabbit is a restaurant & bar with full service dinner, Saturday Brunch, the Best Happy Hour in Nashville 2022 (4-6 PM Mon-Sat) and Live Music every Friday and Saturday. The creative cocktails and large bourbon collection flow generously from the bar while steaks, chops, seafood, & local vegetables emanate from the wood-fired open kitchen. Originally home to a furniture showroom 134 years ago and subsequently the law office of Tommy Osborn, attorney to Jimmy Hoffa, Black Rabbit is writing their own chapter by reimagining what a local Nashville tavern and speakeasy would've been like during Prohibition... wood-fire cooking, strong cocktails, and a sophisticated atmosphere with genuine, relaxed hospitality. Locally owned and operated, we aim to show you our idea of home team hospitality when you visit Downtown Nashville.
The Name:
"Black Rabbit" was the Prohibition Period name of the Minnetta Tavern, a building that still stands in New York City. It was the usual hangout for various writers and artists, including Ernest Hemingway, E.E. Cummings, and Joe Gould, and is the birthplace of "Reader's Digest."
Building History:
Built in 1895, 218 3rd ave N was originally occupied by the Nashville Outfitting (furniture) Company from 1897-1911. The building was sold to the H. Cohen furniture Company, which remained until 1961, when it became the law office of Tommy Osborne, the lawyer of Jimmy Hoffa. The fireplace is in the original location of the fireplace that was bugged by the FBI in 1962, leading to Jimmy Hoffa's arrest.
Jimmy Hoffa:
An American Labor Union leader who served as the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union from 1957-1971, while also serving as a ring leader for the Mob. He was arrested in the Black Rabbit building in 1962, pardoned in 1971 due to his resignation from the Teamsters, and disappeared without a trace in 1975.
"Tommy Gun and Cleaver" Logo:
The tommy gun is a nod to the history of the building, especially the occupancy of Jimmy Hoffa and Tommy Osborne. We juxtapored this image on top of the cleaver as a nod to the midset of our product.
